IU is excited to promote ASDA’s legislative agenda in Indiana. Currently, ASDA is pursuing reforms with respect to a variety of issues affecting dentists and dental students, such as midlevel providers, the Affordable Care Act, and barriers to care. The two issues that IU ASDA is focusing on, though, are student debt and licensure reform.
With respect to student debt, IU hopes to work with the Indiana State Legislature to promote ASDA’s current strategies to reduce the debt burden on dental students. These strategies include:
- Expanding tax deductibility of interest
- Reducing interest rates
- Improving access to loan forgiveness
- Prohibiting the compounding of interest
- Capping interest rates at graduation
- Strengthening regulations to protect private student loan borrowers
In addition, IU ASDA hopes to work with state lawmakers to expand access to loan forgiveness programs within Indiana. While some opportunities currently exist, many students and practitioners find these programs difficult to identify and access. Additionally, these programs are currently limited in numbers. IU ASDA would like to expand access to these opportunities by improving the number of them and the amount of loan forgiveness and scholarship opportunities that they offer.
IU ASDA is also excited to work with the Indiana Assembly and State Board of Examiners on licensure reform. ASDA believes that the ideal licensure exam
- Does not use human subjects in a live clinical testing scenario
- Is psychometrically valid and reliable in its assessment
- Is reflective of the scope of current dental practice
- Is universally accepted
Because of this, the ideal exam would consist of a manikin-based kinesthetic assessment, a non-patient based Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), and a submission of a portfolio of comprehensive patient care. Work still needs to be done to develop a licensure exam of this nature, but IU ASDA is excited at the opportunity to work with lawmakers and dental officials to develop an exam that mirrors these criteria.
